Michigan Security in Home

March 7, 2012

I had some time this weekend to look up more information on my project of understanding the crime rate by state. So, without further delay, I present home security in Michigan is one of the safer states I’ve come across in my research. But one thing that really worried me is the amount of Burglaries compared to population.  Out of 10,000 people, 747 of them have been the victim of a burglary. That’s a whopping 7% of the population of Michigan. That means that people there have more a chance of being burglarized that they do of being in an airplane crash. Yet more people are afraid of flying in an airplane then they are of having their home broken into. That makes no sense to me.I wish I could find a statistic that shows how many people have invested in Michigan home security. As it is, I couldn’t find anything. However, I did find the stats of burglary in Michigan going all the way back to 1960.Surprisingly enough, the rate of burglaries is down from 19% in 1990. I wouldn’t be surprised however, if that number relates directly to number of home security systems that people have bought over the years.

College Crime Down as Technology Use Increases

November 20, 2011

When parents send their kids off to college, there are usually feelings of pride and excitement as well as anxiety and a concern for safety. There is good news for parents of students at Eastern Michigan University, as crime has dropped 65% since 2005.  The primary causes for the drop in all types of crime include the installation of 400 security cameras, an increase in the number of campus safety officers, and educating students on how to prevent and report crimes. Students also appreciate other  safety measures, including a student escort service for walking students home late at night, and electronic lock added to dorms and university apartments.

No matter which college your kids go to, safety matters. Following these tips can help you keep your kids safe when they are away from home:

Safety in numbers – Always go out with at least one friend, preferably a group, even if it is just to spend a late night at the library. Never go alone, especially late at night. You’ll be safer.

Front Door Policies – Many dorms have established security routines for guests, and require them to enter through the front door. Don’t hold open a side door and let in someone you don’t know, even if there is no alarm security on that door.

Dorm room security – Set up routines with your roommate, including always locking the door, to keep your property from getting stolen.

Teach your child the importance of following safety directions before they go to college. It will keep them safer.
